“Teams across the globe now rely on technology services, like the ones Zoom provides, to run their business and stay competitive in the market. COVID-19 may have increased the rate by which this transformation occurred, but this process was underway in some capacity even before the outbreak. The world is becoming more digital every day. That offers many benefits: easy-to-access global communication channels, more flexible work-from-home schedules, increased transparency and collaboration between distant teammates, and the like. However, as our relationship with technology increases in intimacy and dependence, so do the frequency and severity of harms being realized by its use. Many technology companies (not just Zoom), whether intentional or not, have opaque privacy, data, and security policies. Their users are usually the ones to bear the brunt of negative consequences.”
